Week 4 Recap: Baby Monkeys!

Declan Sartawi, Buckeye
Before we get to this week's recaps, let me issue an official denial. There is no truth to the rumor around the league that Brooke & I purposely had our baby early so that she would be back in time for the Tourney. Yes, the Tourney is exactly six weeks away, and that's the recommended recuperation time for new moms, but come on. All of that was tongue in cheek, as are the allegations. I think.
We have a guest doing part of the recaps this week, but first, check out the new poll (in the green sidebar, on the right). On to the week that was...
JoSox 19 20 Camels 22 When the Camels show up with a full squad and play up to their talent, they are as good as any team in the league. It's nice to see them putting it all together. Well done. From the pen of Jeff "Goldilocks" Sillin, co-captain of the Camels: I know that your newborn child provides you a convenient excuse not to include this unfortunate chapter of JoSox history in the Slogs this week. However, if you do find it in your heart to create an entry, here are our notes from the game. Best defense we have ever played, anchored by a solid effort from George Sahyoun at SS, and a spectacular effort from Laith Barhoum at the hot corner (even though he still won't back up a throw for his f-ing life). Mohamed "Z-man" Zalatimo pitched and I don't think he even knows what a walk is. Nobody was hit in the face on our team this week, but I took four balls off the chest. [Mude Note: Does that mean two naked guys sat on Jeff's chest?] If Kevin Rowlson tries to tell you that every ground ball took a candy hop for our defense, tell him that I have the bruises to prove him wrong. At the plate, Aaron Bouchane went 3-5 with a dinger (inside job, the wind was vicious), Laith was 4-5 with another inside the park HR, Tarek Jallad had 4 hits, and yours truly was 5-5 with a triple and a double. Production came throughout the lineup. In a final note, the umps did an admirable job, especially when it came to controlling stupid comments without escalating them. Zaki deserves a nod for that. [Mude Note 2: Too bad he didn't have the required help from his own team. More punishments comin' down.] Canardlys 5 Slackers 18 I hear there was some yelling. Willie & Ash? Jawad? Somehow, the game was played. Slackers continue to roll and take over 1st place. Are they really the team to beat, or is this all the product of the easy part of their schedule and some shorthanded opponents? After all, they did lose to the shorthanded JoSox in Week 1. Time (and a couple of rematches) will tell. Nomads 6 Canardlys 7 Congrats to Canardlys on their first win. It's been a long time coming, and all of the Slogs are elated for your success. Post some stats or your own recap & I'll add it here. Nomads (except Zaki): We're not your maids. Show up & ump your scheduled games like everyone else. It's disgusting... and disrespectful to the rest of the people in the league. Man up. Finally...
To all of my fellow Americans, wherever you may be:
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
(And to the rest of the Free World: You're Welcome.)

Kevin: Use your effing name in your comments--not your nickname, or I'll delete them.

Thanks for all the warm wishes all you Sloggers emailed/texted/called us with. Y'all are as good as (and in many cases much better than) family.

If you think any of the stuff said in here is serious, please know that the first phone call we got was from Ash Samawi (Slackers), followed immediately by Laith Barhoum (Camels). All the trash talk is only in good fun!

Camels: Nice job on the win. Setting aside the captaincy thing, as Commish, I'm very proud of how far you've come. After all, you guys have your origins in Bling Bling. It can only be good for the league to have yet another high-caliber team. (As for the "candy hops," they wouldn't have been easy plays if they were hit harder, so credit to you guys for making plays. Plus, good players often make things look easy.) Congrats, Camels!

Aaron! I was waiting for you to check in. I thought you'd enjoy the Tressel Vest Onesie.

Decco is already versed in the lingo of Michigan haters. Brooke, an enemy in November, has no choice. We found out she was pregnant a couple days before The Game, so the bet was Declan would wear the winner's colors until the next game. He'll never don the blue!

(Kevin's unhappy about it. I imagine Majali & Massarweh don't like it, either. Those are the enemies.)

When U of M wins next fall you better believe little Declan will have some Wolverine gear from Amo Foo Foo.

Kevin,

That's hilarious!

Pryor's stat line will look something like this: 250+ passing, 100+ rushing. The kid is unstoppable.

The buck's defense is stacked this year. Thad Gibson, AKA the Predator, is going to be tearing the heads off QBs. Speaking of, who's scUM going to run out there this year at QB to get crushed every play - last year was an embarrassment. Maybe without Toledo on the schedule they'll break .500 this year. RichRod is a joke.

It's good to be a buckeye!

College football can't get here soon enough!

Ann Arbor is a whore!

your quite capable of running your mouth but perhaps you should stick to do doing what u know best and just walk it instead!

Slackers,

hope next time you play us you'll have some hard balls to play softball! if you do our camel toes would be more than happy to squash those balls!! and this time you wont even be able to walk! and which slacker made that "slacker" comment ...oh sorry I forgot you dont even have the balls to write you name in....

Nomads,

Missing my first game, or shall we say, games...this Friday for the first time in 3 seasons. Wish I didn't have to, but good luck with the Canardlys and the Slackers. Coincidentally, both teams we just lost to are also the teams we play on our first double header this season. Lets hope we make up some ground and come out Friday with a 3-2 record.

Need to prove to everybody that the Nomads got "go-nads"

JoSox, see you guys on the following Friday. My guess is that since the Slackers have caused much of the controversy this time around, that our game will be a bit less hostile than previous match ups; verbally at least. If I'm wrong, then so be it. Classic trash talking between 2 old rivals.

Laith...You have a problem with the integrity of the Slackers when they take walks, but stealing other people's jokes is lower than low. Shame on you. At least mention the conversation Ash & I had.

Slackers...To post a comment, you don't need four balls like your beloved walks. Just two...to actually leave your name and not hide behind mommy's orange apron.

In this debate, Laith's plagiarism is worse than the Slackers not leaving a name. So here's some brutal Slogs truth...

Winter '08

Jan. 18, 2008:
Slackers 17
Trojans 15 (7 inn)

March 1, 2008:
Trojans 18
Slackers 27

Summer '08

June 20, 2008:
Trojans 12
Slackers 20

July 11, 2008:
Slackers 14
Trojans 13 (7 inn)

Summer '09:

June 26, 2009
Slackers 31
Camels 25

That's Slackers 5, Trojans/Camels 0

PS: Green Monsters/JoSox defeated the Trojans/Camels 3 times in Winter '08, and 3 times last summer. 6-1 overall.

Hey Laith,

Jordan may be lax with copyright laws, but the Slogs will make you pay. Believe me, it's only just begun for you. You owe me & Ash.

As for the JoSox/Monsters having their pick of the best players, where would your team be without Aaron Bouchane, Jeff Sillin and Laura Alsenas? I knew what kind of ballplayers they were, and before you even heard of them, they were on your team. I vouched for them to your brother Saif (AKA the good looking Barhoum), and he took my word for it. You're welcome. (I also sent George Seagle & Frank Mattos to Canardlys/Bezzig.) Fact is, my teams have ALWAYS had the LAST pick of new players.

Just for fun, how about Aaron, Jeff & Laura join our team for this Friday's game? Up for the challenge?

Hey Laith,
Congratulations Laith on winning the JoSox.
It seems the adrenaline rush is still in effect since your win on Friday. It shows from being all enthusiastic on the blog, and trashing everyone!!! It happens, especially when you’re deprived for a long time from a W.
Laitho, you’re a very competitive player. I am sure, you’ll do anything to win or stop a ball, even if you have to use your lips to do so .
As for the walking, we’ve walked only the first 5 or 6, and then it was all about hitting. We’ve scored 13 runs; meaning extra 7 or 8 were hitting runs. The JoSox / Monsters always take walks in close games, same as the Nomads, but in our case it was a lot more because your Pitcher was away, and your team failed to throw a strike for a long time, so it was a spontaneous decision to take the easy walk.
Good luck Camels, till we meet again (We’ll not walk this time, as see what excuses you’ll have then!) Well with the Brutal Slog Truth listed by Mude, I am sure the odds don’t look good.
Mude,
I am surprised with the sudden change of rules regarding the expanded strike zone, without the Captains approval!!!! (It’s not in the Rules). I am against it, especially in close games, as it undermines the pitcher’s capabilities, and gives a lot of discretion to the Umps!!! (Many Inexperienced Umps)
Good luck to all on Friday,
BARGO

Mude said...

Karim... There was no rule change. It's just a reminder that the ump has the discretion to call the strike zone loose if he/she feels it's warranted. (As long as it's called the same for both teams.)

And just to keep things transparent, it was put to a captain's vote, passing 3-0 (me, Zaki, Maher). You & Saif were not called on to vote because you were the teams involved in the issue at hand. At worst, it would have been 4-1 had all captains voted. But as it stands, 3 votes make a majority.

Case closed.

JoSox,

You may feel that last week was an anomaly, and you may think that this weekend will provide an opportunity for a quick and resolute correction. But new circumstances have come to light…game changing circumstances. While you have been sitting here, twiddling away precious training time on the blogs, I have been taking decisive action. My hair, which has come under attack for its impracticality in recent weeks, is now largely gone. The aerodynamic implications for my game are momentous. I expect my pace on the base paths to increase by multiple factors. Singles will become doubles, doubles will become home runs, home runs will become DOUBLE home runs. At these speeds, space-time itself will bend around the mass of my body. And if I am able to get rid of the seemingly permanent quaff (ala conan obrien) that a barber somehow managed to craft into my hair with no products besides greasy hands and sheer determination, then I may in fact be able to present the ideal aerodynamic profile for high desert base running.

Alert the internet folks. A sea change is coming. I hope you enjoyed the smooth sailing while it lasted.

-Jeff

P.S. Mude: If you can get an official endorsement from Chuck Norris, Jackie Moon, or Flavor flav, and are willing to give me total creative control over uniforms, logos, team name, team cheers, 7th inning stretch dance routines and theme songs, then I will seriously consider switching to your team. Otherwise, you can JoSuck-It.

Z (Zaki) said...

Ok Bargo, I chose to keep my mouth shut until a false claim was made about the Nomads. First of all, no we don't take walks like certain people, even in close games. Take a closer look at the red clan and you'll notice that we're swinging the bat out there. Don't believe it? I'll whip out the scorebook and have you read through the entire lineup to see these so called back to back continuous walks you claim we take advantage of.

Second of all, expansion of the strike zone was actually decided on after a vote. As Mude said, the 3 votes already taken stand as a majority and the new rule shouldn't even be an issue. But hey of course a Slacker would be the first to complain, as opposed to realizing that the expanded strike zone is put in place to both encourage BOTH teams to swing the bat.

Funny you mention inexperienced umps, you mean like the ones that have to walk up to home plate, have a close look at where a ball left a mark, give it a quick thought....all before calling it a strike or a ball. Are those the inexperienced umps you're talking about? If so, you'd definitely be talking about members of the Slackers and nobody else.

All in all, this bitching and whining about who walked or didn't walk when why and how needs to just be settled on the field. Play your best game out there, don't be cheap, don't try to snag a game by calling out as much B.S. as you can like, "hey ump he took his hat off while running, that's an out right?" I mean seriously guys...just shut the @$*% up and play the game.

The last I knew slow pitch softball was a hitters game.

The strikes I called were not un reasonable by any means, ask Maher and Jawad who got rung up in the 1st inning and I am sure they will tell you them pitches were definitely hittable.

Get up there and swing the doggone bat...or go up there without a bat..it's your choice.

Damn dude, you just verbally spanked Bargo. I am blazed at the moment with Gray laughing our asses off as this Verbal barrage. Hadi Balek.
Very funny, and yes, very true.

As most know, the Nomads was started by yours truly and by Mr. Omar Al Massaraweh. I feel I am in a position to verify Mr. Ibrahim's claim that the Nomads are not a walking team, they might be "chokers; but no, they are not walkers.

Complaining about a strike zone that encourages players to hit seems to be Nancy like. After all, softball is a hitter's game.

A blazed Freak, an angry Slacker, a rambling Nomad and a Trojan with a new buzzcut. Feels like 2007.

Jeff...This sudden fixation on your hair has earned you a nickname. I've edited this entry to reflect the breaking news.

Karim...Forgot to mention this: The best ump at consistently calling an expanded strike zone is your teammate Ash. We even talked about it prior to the vote.

Mude Sartawi said...

A couple notes for the record:

The reason for the expanded zone vote was because a few captains wanted something done about it. Let me be clear about this: These captains were not involved in the Camels-Slackers game. These were guys who realize that we all run this league together and they did not want ASL turned into photo shoot, with batters posing in the batter's box instead of hitting the ball.

At no time did the Camels or their captains lobby for a change. Saif, Jeff, et al, did not like what happened, but they took the loss in stride without whining or pressing for a rule change.

But I repeat: There was NO RULE CHANGE, despite Zaki's comments above. The umps have always had the discretion to call the strike zone as they see fit, as long as it applied equally. This is the case in every level of softball/baseball.

And Karim, if you want to suddenly go with a strict interpretation of our rules, then Willie & Rocky would be ejected from every single game, probably before the first out. So might Kevin, Jawad, Maher, Zaki, Massarweh, Laith...

As far I recall week 3 the slackers were swinging against the Nomads. Fact the game ended 38 -16.That got to hurt that shows that your pitcher was throwing strikes not like the camels.
